Previously, Sumiran contributed significantly at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Govt. of India where she led national and international research studies. Some of them included the delisting of rice from the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA) and identifying export potential for agricultural products. Her meticulous research and stakeholder collaboration have been instrumental in policy development and trade facilitation. Sumiran’s journey also includes impactful roles for the Gates Foundation projects under the National Data Innovation Centre at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER). There she contributed to studies on COVID-19 poverty, gender differences in risk perception, and media usage related to vaccine willingness using primary and secondary data.
Sumiran’s academic credentials include a Pre-Masters in Econometrics and Management Sciences from Erasmus University, Rotterdam, Netherlands and an MS in Social and Applied Economics from the US. During her studies she interned at United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UN – SIAP) in Japan and at MARV Capital Inc. in New York City where she gained knowledge of Sustainable Development Goals and financial analysis respectively.
With certifications in data science, corporate finance, and project management, Sumiran brings a blend of technical expertise and strategic insight to her work. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys playing the Indian classical instrument Tabla, practicing Hatha Yoga, and engaging in voluntary teaching.
